Sarah Penney

Is a young female illustrator/ designer i came across through this blog.
she showed me some of her work via email and I was highly impressed and happy to come across a illustrator with her own distinctive style.

Unlike half of the repetitive garbage i see all to often in this day and age. Her sweet and relaxed subject matter allows a sense of her personality to come through her work in a way which is refreshing and honest.

The candy, pastel like colors used in her pieces, add another dimension to the illustrations and brings them to life. Almost out of the screen and into your hand. (well it does for me any)

She also dabbles in making things with her hands as well as just using the mighty paper and pencil.

Ben Frost, Crapitalism

Last night i was invited to the private view of the first uk solo show by
Ben Frost, which was represented by No Walls Gallery. For those of you who have never heard of Ben Frost.

SNV30116

He is artist from Sydney most well known for his confronting and often controversial Pop Art paintings. Using a ‘collage’ style of unlikely juxtapositions, his dynamic paintings are complex mash-ups of popular culture that savagely critique our media and advertising obsessed society.

Some of you may have heard of his
now infamous 2000 exhibition and art prank ‘Ben Frost is Dead’ which saw him fake his own death and was branded ‘tasteless’ when the art world and national media actually believed his demise.

Stour Valley Arts, Super Kingdom, 2008

Super Kingdom is a development of new animal habitats within King's Wood. These luxury homes are modelled on the imperious palaces of Stalin, Ceauscescu and Mussolini and offer nesting and over-winter sites to native and migrant species.

London Field Works (Bruce Gilchrist & Jo Joelson) newly commissioned work draws upon the artists' research into the hibernation patterns of animals within King's Wood. It also reflects on issues of mass population movement such as that planned for nearby Ashford. Super Kingdom will comprise a sculptural installation within the forest and a digital moving image work, and is the first time Store Valley Arts commissioned artists have focused their research on the animals of the forest.

Insa Heels

I'm a bit late with reporting this one as I've been away, but for those who don't know the Insa's Heels were released last week to the general public for sale some time last wewk.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Corresponding text giving a insight into the shows have been taken from his website.

Operating in a sphere where the personally chosen name, a nom de plume, is everything and style is paramount, the name 'INSA' is one that is synonymous with all that is desirable, limited and crafted to the highest standards.

INSA's world is one where fetishism, desire and graffiti collide; through extensive street level work and fine art INSA has taken the iconic high heel image and made it his own, infusing a simple, yet clever, graphic 'logo' with meaning and relevance. High heels represent a myriad of different things to different people; sex, money, fashion, the battle between masculine and feminine sexuality, dominant and submissive, consumerism and object fetishism; all of which are themes actively explored in INSA's work. Heels themselves are often, of course, objects of desire and objets d'art in their own right.

The fantasy of 'INSA HEELS' is now a reality...

Two-Day Auction of New Works by Damien Hirst Realises Over £111, 000, 000

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Fifty-four lots went under the hammer 2 days ago, raising more than the conservative pre-sale estimate of £65 million for the entire two-day event.
Damien Hirst sold 223 new works directly through Sotheby's in the "Beautiful Inside My Head Forever" sale, saving millions by cutting out dealers' commission. The upper estimate for the whole event is £98 million.

His gamble, which was watched with great interest by fellow artists, paid off in spectacular style.
Damien Hirst has exceeded the previous record for an auction of works by one artist, set in 1993 by Picasso. That sale, which had 88 lots, totalled $20 million (£11.29 million).

The Golden Calf, a bull preserved in formaldehyde, adorned with hooves, a disk above its head and horns made of 18-carat gold, broke the world record for the sale of a Hirst at auction, going for £10.3 million.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
However, the hammer price for The Golden Calf of £9.2 million – before Sotheby's buyer's premium was applied – was on the low side of the £8-12 million pre-sales estimate.

Nonetheless, the market appeared strong as some of the richest art collectors in the world converged on London's New Bond Street to feast on
Damien Hirst's works.

Damien Hirst, 43, who is criticized by some for using an army of assistants to help him create his work, has called the auction a "mini retrospective" and "probably the most amazing show I've put on".

Another major sale - selling for more than 50 per cent above its pre-sale estimate, was a shark in formaldehyde, called The Kingdom. It sold for £9.6 million including the buyer's premium.

Fragments Of Paradise, made from stainless steel, glass and manufactured diamonds, was estimated at £1-1.5 million, but sold for more than three times that - just under £5.2 million.

Following the tremendous result achieved the day before the Evening session of Beautiful on tuesday the 17th september 2008 Inside My Head Forever - Sotheby’s historic and ground-breaking two-day auction of new works by Damien Hirst - the Day Sale continued to attract unprecedented interest, bringing the combined total for the entire two-day auction to the remarkable sum of £111,464,800 (US$200,752,179/€140,160,487) – well in excess of its high estimate (est. £68-98 million).

Following the conclusion of the sale today, Damien Hirst said: “I think the market is bigger than anyone knows, I love art and this proves I’m not alone and the future looks great for everyone!”

TAKASHI MURAKAMI

As you've probably gathered by now, im a huge anime junkie, so its only right that i feature one of my favourite artists Takashi Murakami. Murakami is one of japans most renown contemporary artists, working within all aspects of art, from painting to commercial/anime. The innovative Murakami style is translated into his art movement 'Superflat', whereby he incorporated popular culture into 'flattened forms' of japanese art in 30ft sculptures.
The superflat style incorporates a graphic style derived from anime/manga, as well as a range huge range of colour. The superflat style not only addresses japanese lifestyles & culture, but also looks into consumerism with popular culture.

ACCEPT & PROCEED

Accept & Proceed are a design collective that provide graphic design & direction for a variety of projects, ranging from fashion to the music industry. What blew me away about A&P was the way each of their projects are fresh and different, which is probably what attracted their impressive clientele. With clients such as Nike, Sony & Evisu you've got to be doing something right!
Accept & Proceed previously worked with Nike on a project merging illustration & sneakers. With the A&P input they created a series of trainers that incorporated the technological side of nike sneakers, as well as the innovative aspect. The stories behind the sneakers were described by A&P as 'Seduced by Innovation and Recognising the original'. You can expect to see some further A&P/Nike collaboration in the future.
